Safety First, Always!
Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but they can be dangerous if not handled properly. Follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
General Safety Rules
DO's
- ✓ Read and follow all instructions on fireworks labels
- ✓ Have a water source nearby (hose or buckets)
- ✓ Light fireworks one at a time
- ✓ Keep spectators at a safe distance
- ✓ Wear safety glasses when lighting
- ✓ Light fireworks on a flat, stable surface
- ✓ Dispose of used fireworks properly
DON'Ts
- ✗ Never relight a "dud" firework
- ✗ Don't carry fireworks in your pocket
- ✗ Never point or throw fireworks at people
- ✗ Don't use fireworks while impaired
- ✗ Never modify or make your own fireworks
- ✗ Don't allow young children to handle fireworks
- ✗ Never light fireworks indoors

Handling Specific Types
Sparklers
- Burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt metal
- Never give to children under 5 years old
- Always have a bucket of water nearby to dispose of used sparklers
- Hold at arm's length and away from body
- Light one at a time
Cakes & Repeaters
- Place on hard, flat, level surface
- Never hold in your hand
- Secure lightweight cakes with bricks or stakes
- Light fuse and get away quickly
- Never stand over the device when lighting
Artillery Shells
- Use only the tubes provided with the shells
- Place tube in sand or dirt, or use a proper rack
- Never hold the tube in your hand
- Drop shell in tube with fuse hanging out
- Light fuse and retreat to safe distance immediately
Emergency Procedures
In Case of Emergency
Burns:
- Cool the burn with cold water for at least 10 minutes
- Remove jewelry and clothing near the burn
- Cover with sterile gauze
- Seek medical attention for serious burns
Eye Injuries:
- Do not rub or rinse the eye
- Do not apply pressure
- Seek immediate medical attention
Fire:
- Call 911 immediately
- Use water or fire extinguisher if safe to do so
- Evacuate the area
- Never use water on a magnesium fire
Legal Considerations
- Check local laws and ordinances before using fireworks
- Obtain necessary permits if required
- Respect time restrictions (many areas prohibit fireworks after certain hours)
- Never use fireworks on public property unless permitted
- Be considerate of neighbors and pets
- You may be liable for injuries or property damage
Children and Fireworks
Special Precautions for Children
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
- Sparklers should only be used by children over 5 with adult supervision
- Teach children to "Stop, Drop, and Roll" if clothing catches fire
- Keep young children at a safe distance from all fireworks

- Consider glow sticks as a safe alternative for young children
